I had a shared hosting account with Host Gator no so long ago, and it was a great experience as far as web hosts go.
Didn't have much downtime, if any I recall, and any support requests were dealt with virtually instantly.
Their packages are excellent and the prices are about the best you can find for a big reliable company.
The extras that come with the account are superb, but in fact you do get pretty similar packages everywhere now, it's just that Host Gator publish virtually every little detail on the sales pages, making it look like they offer more compared to other hosts.
Overall, very good host for anyone wanting a starting point.
